Alumni share their expertise and knowledge in a series of seminars held by SPUI College of Nursing

The batch of 2015 of the College of Nursing, Sanante Milites Salvatoris, sponsored seminars on “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome” and “Experience in a New Graduate Program” on September 17, 2014 at the Marian Theater.

At the “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome” seminar, guest speaker, Lori Taleon-Salinas, MN, RN, PMHCNS-BC, (SPUI-BSN 1979, Lumiere Maries) challenged her fellow Paulinians to bring this issue into the consciousness of the community as birth defects caused by the drinking habit of mothers during their pregnancy has dire consequences not only on children but on the community, as a whole. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy, exposes the developing fetus to a multitude of physical and mental deformities. Such deformities restrict their growth and limit their participation to social and communal activities. Children affected by this syndrome exhibit behavioral disorders like hyperactivity, inattention, impulsiveness, stubbornness, anxiety, and withdrawal. They also have physical deformities and disabilities that curb their full functioning as individuals.

Teaching parents on the effects of drinking alcohol during pregnancy , or  binge drinking during child-bearing age, can have great impact not only on the health of the individuals but also on the well-being of the community. She suggested integrating this education component in their community health initiatives.

University President Sr. Carolina Agravante, SPC, commended Lori for her initiatives and advocacy in the field of mental health issues. She also assured her that SPUI College of Nursing does innovative nursing and that it is poised to rise up to the challenge that Lori raised at the beginning of her presentation.

To cap the event, a certificate of appreciation was presented by Sr. Carol to Lori for sharing her knowledge and time with the SPUI College of Nursing.

A similar commendation was also presented to Irina Isabel Taleon, as the guest speaker in the seminar, “Experience in a New Graduate Program. “

The seminars on the “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome” and the “Experience in a New Graduate Program,” are one of many seminars held by the College of Nursing to enrich the learning experiences of their students. They also provide a forum for SPUI alumni and experts to share their knowledge with the students and faculty of the College. In Lori’s words,  it is “balik-handog” to the community that nourished her growth as a professional nurse.
