Last October 5 at the Marian Theater of St. Paul University Iloilo, the Wellness Center and the Cultural Office opened a cultural show entitled “SARILING ATIN VELADA: KALINGAWAN SA SAN PABLO” with the participation of Paulinians from various colleges and numerous alumni. The event was a celebration of Filipino music and dances. These presentations are one way for SPUI to foster among Paulinians the appreciation towards our rich culture!
“Kalingawan sa San Pablo” celebrates the Filipinos love for music! We are said to be musical peoples. In most cases, our singing is accompanied by dancing. Music was first used for songs of praise with instruments being played to drive away evil spirits accompanied by songs and chants. Through time, music permeated our way of life and became part of our daily routines. It was used in connection with life-cycle events such as birth, courtship, marriage, and death. Even occupational activities such as planting, harvesting, hunting and fishing, and functions such as peace pacts and victory celebrations were occasions for music making. Music was then naturally learned through participation by singing of songs and playing of instruments. Thus, it evolved into entertainment without the participation of ordinary people but with formal performers. (Excerpts taken from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts website.)
