Iloilo City, September 11, 2024— St. Paul University Iloilo (SPUI) marked another step toward internationalization with the launch of its partnership with Camosun College, a well-respected Canadian institution. Held at the Marian Theatre, the event highlighted the SPC Pauline missionary tradition showcased the university’s ambition to reach global competence while staying true to its Pauline values.

In her opening address, Sr. Teresita Baricaua, SPC, University President, welcomed the audience with a call for unity and cultural exchange. “Our goal is to create unions between cultures. Let us embrace the diverse perspectives that each one of us brings and collaborate for a brighter impact,” she declared. Her words set the tone for the event, highlighting SPUI’s commitment to producing globally competitive Paulinian Students while maintaining its core mission.

Dr. Elsie Tedoco, in her presentation, gave an overview of the university’s internationalization journey. She traced it back to November 13, 2023, when the initial discussions with Camosun College began during an international conference. This was followed by a series of key milestones, including an info session on “Creating Rich Learning Opportunities” in March 2024, and a “Writeshop Training on the Manual of Operations” in May 2024. Notably, the university signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with Gyeongbuk Technical High School in South Korea and the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) in August 2024. The latest milestone was the Student Support Commitment (SSC) signing with Camosun College on September 11, 2024, solidifying the collaboration.

It was followed by an Ilonggo cultural performance, choreographed by Mr. Romie John Delariarte, provided a vibrant interlude to the formal proceedings, underscoring the rich Ilonggo heritage SPUI brings to the global stage.

The highlight of the event came when testimonials were shared by individuals deeply impacted by the internationalization program. Mrs. Cecil Mondogo, a parent whose child benefited from Camosun College’s programs, shared a heartfelt reflection on the sacrifices her family made and the brighter future her child now enjoys thanks this opportunity. “The internationalization initiative has opened doors we never imagined possible,” she said, emphasizing the profound personal impact of the partnership. Dr. Baldemoro Defensor, Jr., principal of the Basic Education Unit of the University of La Salle in Bacolod, also shared his experiences. He expressed gratitude for being part of a collaborative project that enhances students’ skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, and communication, key elements of the Camosun-SPUI partnership. He acknowledged the dedication of both institutions in creating a global platform for academic and professional success.

A video presentation followed, showcasing Camosun College and its unique blend of multiculturalism and academic excellence. Dr. Daniel Zaldin from Camosun College then took the stage to emphasize the transformative potential of the partnership. “In this globalized world, we are all interconnected,” he said, highlighting the opportunities available to Filipino students at Camosun, from leadership roles to academic projects. “Canada is a multicultural place where students thrive in a diverse environment, preparing them for success both at home and abroad.”

The event’s message of gratitude was delivered by Ms. Jennifer Montero from Camosun College, who shared the meaning behind the college’s name: “Where two waters meet and transform.” She acknowledged figures, including Sr. Teresita Baricaua and Dr. Sharon Ann Mendoza, and spoke about the importance of self-care in international education. Her inspiring message to the students was simple yet powerful: “When you care for someone, you should start with yourself. The way you care for yourself resonates with how you care for others.”

A lively open forum followed, where students engaged with the speakers, asking questions about the program and the benefits it could offer them. The event concluded with the official signing of the Student Support Commitment (SSC), further cementing the bond between St. Paul University Iloilo and Camosun College.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Sharon Ann P. Mendoza, SPUI Vice President for Academic Affairs, encapsulated the event’s spirit: “Let us explore the world, bring the Filipino people together, and carry our Pauline values forward for a brighter future.” She expressed her gratitude to Camosun College for their continued support and dedication to meaningful reforms in education.
