September 20, 2024β€”marks Day 1 of the CEAP Region VI annual conference of spiritual rejuvenation and visionary dialogue. The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) launched its annual regional event with the theme β€œPilgrims and Agents of Hope and Synodality,” gathering educators, students, parents, and leaders from Region IV in Catholic education to reflect on the transformative power of their mission. The basic education department of Saint Paul University Iloilo attended the event, and it commenced with a solemn Eucharistic Mass celebrated by Bishop Marvyn A. Maceda, DD, setting a reflective and hopeful tone for the day’s proceedings.

A vibrant cultural performance by students of Ateneo de Iloilo captured the diverse and rich heritage of the region, showcasing the talents of young Filipinos who are at the heart of the mission of Catholic education. Following the performance, Rev. Father Joseph Raymund Patrick Sanches, SJ, President of Ateneo de Iloilo, extended his heartfelt welcome to all delegates, emphasizing the importance of leadership in Catholic education. β€œWe value your presence,” he said, addressing teachers, parents, students, and leaders. β€œAnd we hope that today you find inspiration to continue your work in guiding the next generation.”

Fr. Jose Gualberto Villasis, PhD, Assistant Regional Trustee and President of Aklan Catholic College, delivered a comprehensive overview, focusing on the ongoing journey of Catholic education. He highlighted the need for a deeper dialogue within the education community: β€œWe seek to keep our work and move forward for the betterment of the Catholic education community,” he said. β€œThis is more than just a diagnostic tool; it is a meaningful dialogue that suggests actions and responses guided by the Holy Spirit.”

A message from CEAP National President Fr. Albert Delvo, PhD, delivered by CEAP Executive Director Mr. Allan Arellano, stressed the importance of forward-thinking leadership. β€œWe must launch our schools on a forward journey to ensure they remain relevant, valued, and motivated,” Fr. Delvo’s message stated. He called for Catholic schools to embody the values of the gospel, embrace agility, and intensify collaboration within the education sector. This was followed by an inspiring message from Fr. Mauricio Ulep, CEAP National Vice President, who urged the attendees to β€œignite the flame of hope in our school communities.” Drawing from the teachings of Pope Francis, Fr. Ulep reminded everyone that their work should be anchored in the love of Christ. β€œCatholic education is invited on a journey of hope,” he said, reinforcing the day’s theme of faith and renewal.

CEAP Executive Director Mr. Allan Arellano presented a comprehensive report covering the period from November 2023 to August 2024. His report detailed the accomplishments and ongoing initiatives that reflect CEAP’s commitment to enhancing Catholic education in the Philippines. Following his presentation, certificates were awarded to CEAP heads, recognizing their dedication and leadership.

The afternoon began with breakout sessions and spiritual conversations centered around the EDCOM 2 Report, involving parents, teachers, students, and administrators. Participants discussed challenges within the school system and explored potential solutions. Each sector formed groups to share their insights, emphasizing the need for open dialogue and collaboration. Students were particularly encouraged to voice their concerns, embodying the event’s spirit of synodalityβ€”journeying together as a community.

Reporters from each group presented the collective thoughts and proposed solutions of their members, encouraging a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility. The day concluded with a group photo and a closing prayer capturing the hope and resolve that filled the room.
